A brochure has to survive being folded, carried and opened repeatedly, which is why paper weight and fold type are not cosmetic decisions. Too light and it feels disposable; too heavy and the fold cracks along the spine.

The fold determines how your content is read. A tri-fold reveals panels in sequence, so it suits a step-by-step story. A bi-fold gives you a bigger spread and suits product ranges. A Z-fold opens flat, which works when the whole message needs to be seen at once.

We design to the fold from the start, allowing for the fact that on a tri-fold the innermost panel must be a couple of millimetres narrower or it buckles when closed. That detail is missed constantly by designers who have not worked with a folding machine.

What brochure printing includes

How it works

A predictable sequence from brief to delivery, with a proof stage you must check before anything goes to press.

  1. Format

Fold type and finished size, which determine the panel layout.

  2. Panel planning

Content mapped to panels in reading order, with correct panel widths for the fold.

  3. Design

Layout built with fold allowances and safe margins from the outset.

  4. Folding dummy

A blank folded sample on the actual stock, so you can feel it before printing.

  5. Print

4-colour both sides, then lamination if specified.

  6. Crease and fold

Creased and machine folded, then counted and packed.

Brochure Printing — frequently asked questions

Which brochure fold should I choose?

Tri-fold suits a sequential story and fits a standard envelope. Bi-fold gives a larger spread for product ranges and photography. Z-fold opens flat so the whole message is visible at once. Tell us what the brochure has to communicate and we will recommend the fold.

Why does my brochure crack along the fold?

Because it was folded without creasing first. On stocks above about 170 GSM the paper fibre breaks when forced, especially through a dark printed area. Creasing compresses the fibre along the fold line first. We crease heavier stocks as standard.

Why must the inner panel of a tri-fold be narrower?

Because it folds inside the other two. If all three panels are equal width, the inner panel hits the fold and buckles when the brochure is closed. It needs to be roughly 2mm narrower. This is a standard allowance that supplied artwork frequently misses.

Should I laminate the brochure?

For anything handed out repeatedly or kept for reference, yes. Lamination stops fingerprints and scuffing along the fold. Matte looks understated, gloss makes photography pop. For a short-life handout it is an unnecessary cost.

Can you print a company profile booklet?

Yes. Multi-page profiles move from folding to binding — saddle stitching for up to about 48 pages, perfect binding above that. See our catalogue printing page for details on bound work.
