Letterpress is the opposite of high-volume commercial print. It is slow, the setup is involved, and it only makes sense when the physical feel of the piece is part of the message — premium visiting cards, wedding invitations, certificates, launch announcements.

The effect comes from pressing an inked plate into soft, thick cotton stock so the impression is felt as much as seen. That requires paper with enough bulk to take the bite, which is why letterpress runs on 400 to 600 GSM cotton board rather than standard art card.

It is genuinely expensive relative to offset, and it is not the right choice for most jobs. We will tell you when a spot UV or foil finish on standard card would achieve what you want for a fraction of the cost.

Can letterpress print photographs?

No, not well. Letterpress reproduces solid shapes, type and line art. Photographs and fine gradients do not translate. If your design depends on a photograph, offset or digital printing with a spot UV or foil accent will serve you far better.

Why is letterpress so much more expensive?

Because each colour needs its own plate, the press is set up by hand for each job, it runs slowly, and the cotton stock itself costs several times more than art card. It is a craft process — worth it when the tactile quality is the point, wasteful when it is not.

What is duplexing?

Bonding two sheets of card together to create a much thicker piece, often with different colours front and back so a coloured edge line shows. It is a common letterpress technique for very substantial cards.

Is there a cheaper way to get a premium feel?

Yes — 400 GSM card with matte lamination and spot UV, or a foil-stamped detail on standard stock, gets you most of the perceived quality at a fraction of the cost. We would rather point you there than sell you letterpress you do not need.
