Offset vs digital printing: which one your job actually needs

Digital printing has no plate setup, so it is cheaper for short runs and allows single copies. Offset printing has a setup cost but a much lower cost per copy, so it becomes cheaper as quantity rises — typically from around a thousand copies for standard commercial work.

This is the question behind most print quotes, even when nobody says it out loud. Choosing wrong does not ruin the job, but it can easily double what you pay.

Where the crossover falls

There is no universal number, because it depends on size, colours and finishing. As a working rule for standard commercial jobs in Surat, offset starts to win somewhere around a thousand copies, and wins decisively well above that. Below a few hundred, digital is almost always cheaper.

The crossover moves with the job. A single-colour A5 handbill reaches it at a different quantity than a four-colour A4 brochure. Ask for both quotes — any honest printer will give you them.

Which to choose, by job

  • Pamphlets, 1,000+ — offset, comfortably.
  • Visiting cards, 500–1,000 — usually offset; check both at 500.
  • Exhibition samples, 25 catalogues — digital, no question.
  • Bill books with sequential numbering — offset for the printing, with numbering applied mechanically.
  • Personalised items or variable data — digital, because offset cannot change plate to plate.
  • A single poster or banner — large-format digital.

What about quality?

Modern digital output is genuinely good, and for most commercial work the difference is not visible to a client holding the piece. Offset still has the edge on very long runs, on precise spot and Pantone colour matching, and on some specialist stocks. For a pamphlet handed out in the street, the difference is irrelevant; for packaging that must match a brand colour exactly, it is not.

Ask for both

Frequently asked questions

Can I print 200 pamphlets?

Yes, on digital press. Offset would be uneconomical at that quantity because the plate setup dominates the cost. Digital has no setup, so short runs are entirely practical — and often cheaper than you expect.

Will offset and digital versions of the same file look identical?

Very close, but not identical. Offset can hold spot and Pantone colours exactly, while digital simulates them in CMYK. For most commercial work the difference is not noticeable; for exact brand-colour matching, offset with a hard proof is the safer route.

Which is faster?

Digital, for the first copy — there is no plate making. But for very large quantities offset runs far faster per thousand, so on a big job offset often finishes sooner despite the slower start.
