Sublimation printing: what can be customised, and what cannot
Sublimation is the process behind most personalised mugs, jerseys, keychains and photo gifts. It is genuinely durable, needs no setup, and has one hard limitation that catches people out constantly.
How it works
Design is printed onto transfer paper with special dyes. Paper and product go into a heat press. Under heat and pressure the solid dye converts directly to gas, penetrates the surface, and solidifies inside it as things cool. The image becomes part of the surface rather than a layer applied to it — which is why it does not peel, crack or wash off.
The limitation: it needs polyester or a coating
Sublimation dye bonds to polyester fibres and to specially coated hard surfaces. It does not bond to cotton. Print onto a 100% cotton t-shirt and the design washes out.

Why there is no minimum order
Unlike offset or screen printing, sublimation has no plates and no screens to make. Nothing has to be set up before the first piece, so a single item costs the same to produce as one item within a batch. That makes it well suited to individual gifts, awards, and small corporate batches where a larger minimum would be prohibitive.
Getting good results
- Send the original image file, not a version saved from WhatsApp or Instagram — both compress heavily.
- Aim for roughly 300 DPI at the printed size. A small image enlarged onto a mug looks soft.
- Remember the wrap: on a mug, part of the design curves away from the viewer. Keep key content central.
- Very fine light-coloured detail can lose contrast against a white surface — bolder artwork reproduces better.
