Visiting card finishes: matte, gloss, spot UV, foil and letterpress compared
A visiting card is usually the first physical object a prospect holds from your business, and the finish communicates before a single word is read. The differences are easy to understand and worth ten minutes, because the cost gap between them is significant.

Spot UV is the value pick
If you want a card that feels considered without moving into foil or letterpress pricing, spot UV over matte lamination is the strongest option. The contrast between the matte background and a glossy logo is both visual and tactile, it catches light as the card turns, and it costs a fraction of foiling.
Weight matters as much as finish
- 300 GSM — the practical standard. Professional and unremarkable in a good way.
- 350 GSM — noticeably more substantial in the hand.
- 400 GSM — premium; about the upper limit before a card becomes awkward in a wallet.
- Above 400 GSM — usually duplexed cotton board for letterpress, and no longer wallet-friendly.

The mistake that ruins good cards
Text placed too close to the trim edge. Cutting machines have a small tolerance, so anything within about 3mm of the cut risks being clipped on some cards in the stack. Losing the last digit of a phone number on a fifth of the run is a genuinely expensive error, and it has nothing to do with which finish you chose.
